Adam & Eve Weren’t the First Humans, According to the Bible.

1. Genesis in a nutshell.

It is important to note that although the Genesis narrative does read as history (to what extent is debatable) it also implements elements of allegory, metaphor, and symbolism. A reading of Genesis might suggest that Adam and Eve were historical people, that the Garden of Eden was a location, and that God really created the universe via physical forces, and that Cain, should we assume the trustworthiness of the tradition, really mercilessly murdering his brother Abel in the farm fields. Again, there is much debate and disagreement concerning these topics. Many scholars doubt that Adam & Eve were actually historical people, or that there really was an Eden. Again, this is debatable.

However, symbolism is also seen as in the Garden of Eden where Satan is presented as as a snake which probably symbolizes the seductive and narcissistic behavior of sin and that of Satan’s cunning prowess. The tree of ‘good and evil’ was probably not a literal tree as a tree cannot be good and evil. Eve being created from the rib of Adam is probably symbolic of woman being made for man and man being made for woman, and perhaps a message telling us that man and woman are complimentary in nature. In Genesis 2:7 we read of God forming man from the dust, obviously this is not intended to be literal. We are not told how God actually formed man or beast, and given its divine revelation suggests that God doesn’t care to readers of unimportant details. Even the name Eve means “The source of life” or “Mother of All Living”, and Adam simply means “man”.

The point being that the early Genesis creation narrative is rife with symbolism. To this end it is very difficult to know what constitutes history and what doesn’t. This is arguably why there is so much debate on the Bible’s first chapters.

2. Where some probably get it wrong.

The Young Earth Creationist (those who view the Earth as roughly 6000 – 10 000 years old) argues that Adam and Eve’s descendants married their brothers and sisters since this was their only choice. No-one else existed for them to choose from. In other words incest was committed. The general response is that Adam and Eve, and their early descendants, were genetically pure as God made them that way. Therefore, any imperfections or harmful genetic mutations manifested only much later. Could this be possible? Could God somehow make the first humans genetically pure even though they would interbreed? Sure, I don’t suppose that it would be impossible for God, but here lies the problem: nowhere does the biblical record actually suggest that this is what happened. Nowhere does it mention that Adam’s descendants intermarried. It is therefore an effort on the part of some Christians, for example, to fit the narrative into a young Earth interpretation. Later we find out that the Bible condemns incest in Leviticus 20:17: “If a man shall take his sister, his father’s daughter, or his mother’s daughter, and see her naked, and she sees him naked, it is a wicked thing; and they shall be cut off in the sight of their people.”

This Christian will then go on to say that only later did God deem incest wrong. This is not an impossible conclusion, but I don’t believe the Bible supports it.

3. Cain’s worry.

According to Genesis 4:1-15 Adam and Eve give birth to Cain and Abel. This, according to some Christians, implies that there were only four family members on Earth at that time. Now, after Cain had killed Abel there were only three people, but then after Cain did this deed God appears to him and kicks him out of the Garden of Eden as punishment. Cain then moves to the land of Nod, which is East of Eden, but what Cain then says to God is quite revealing. He tells God that he was worried of being killed by other people who would find him (Genesis 4:15). Then God replies, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” (Genesis 4:15) God and Cain both imply, for our case, indirectly that there are other humans besides Adam and Eve. If there were no other people, God would not have had to give him a mark in the first place, and Cain would not have had anything to fear.

4. Cain’s wife.

In Genesis 4:16, Cain goes out from God’s presence and finds a wife, and impregnates her: “Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.”

Cain had to find his wife, an act that could only happen if there were people to choose from. Assuming that we can trust this tradition it is way more likely that Cain came upon a town or village that already existed. We then read that  Cain was himself “building a city,” which would probably be a small village of sorts. But then why would Cain build a city (village) if it was only him, his wife, and son? A city (village) implies many people inhabiting an area. Thus Cain’s tradition suggest that Adam and Eve were not the only humans alive at the time.

5. Be Fruitful.

In Genesis 1:28 God tells Adam and Eve to: “Be fruitful and multiply, and Replenish the earth.” The word replenish means “to fill”, and one cannot replenish something, in this case the Earth (which would indicate a local area, the Mesopotamian Basin – see points 10, 11 & 12 here), if it was not plenished (filled) to some degree before God’s command was issued. If Adam and Eve were the only two humans then this would make God’s instruction fruitless, instead God could have said, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the whole (tebel – which indicates global, not local) earth.”

6. Paul on the first man.

Paul writes in Romans 5:12: “Therefore, even as through one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed on all men inasmuch as all sinned”

Here, one may argue, death refers to spiritual death and not to physical death. So Adam, perhaps being the first man to be made in the image of God, would be the first human to break God’s trust. There are a variety interpretations of what it means to be made in the image of God but I take it to be humankind’s separation from the animal kingdom. This may include the abilities of advanced communication and rationality which are likewise present in animals on a much more basic level. Many have argued that it is our commission to represent God’s kingdom on Earth, as well as have a relationship with the one true God. In other words, God endowed man with a spiritual dimension and a soul.

7. Paul’s literal view of Adam being the first man:

Paul writes: “But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.” (2 Timothy 2:11-14) And: “For indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake.” (1 Corinthians 11:9)

Paul clearly implies that man came a single pair of humans, Adam and Eve. Christian biblical scholar Peter Enns argues that Paul assumed that mankind came from Adam and Eve, and that Paul is expressing his own view, as he does throughout his letters. Enns explains that “Paul certainly assumed that Adam was a person and the progenitor of the human race, and I would expect nothing less from Paul being a 1st Century man. And again, God speaks in ways and uses categories that are available to human beings at that time. I don’t expect Paul to have had a conversation with Francis Collins (a leading geneticist, and biologist) about the Genome Project, and how common descent is essential. Technically I don’t expect him to understand that.” Enns goes on to say that “How Paul handles Adam does not determine modern scientific discoveries about the origin of humanity.”

However, Enns’ view is not the only one out there and many Christians would strongly counter his claims. Essentially, as other Christians argue, that to claim that Paul assumed that Adam and Eve were literal historical people is to undermine the very basis upon which Paul argues and constructs his theological views.

8. Conclusion.

The Bible itself implies that God did create other people alongside and before Adam & Eve. By tying it all together we find that:

1. Adam & Eve conceived Cain, their first child (Gen. 4:1).
2. Cain was exiled by God for murdering Abel (Gen 14:6).
3. While exiled Cain worries that he will be killed by strangers (Gen 4:15 = other people).
3. Soon Cain finds a wife & builds a city (Gen 4:17 = other people).
4. Other people existed external to the Garden at this time.
5. Conclusion: Adam & Eve were not the first humans God created.

  1. “God poofed them into existence”

When you speak this way you sound the same as a derisive atheist. I’m sure that is not your intent.

  2. “However, it is also likely the case that God did not reveal to him exactly how he created mankind, or that there were other people alive before and after Adam and Eve – such a thing would be totally irrelevant to God’s plan for Paul to spread the Gospel, and not to give him a biology lecture.”

It seems like you are clutching at straws here. I see this alot with theistic evolutionists. Rather than accept the bible is wrong, they have to make up excuses and reasons to keep believing it.They say things like “they wouldn’t understand that in their time.” Why couldn’t all powerful god find a way to communicate reality in a simplistic way to ancient man? It’s pretty sad that he couldn’t teach moses the reality of evolution. “god created man from lower animals.” See, that’s pretty simple. Why bring dust into it at all?

Also, If Adam & Eve were the first ones made in the image of god, where would that leave the rest of the homo sapiens? Were they dumb as posts? Did Adam procreate with lesser hominids? Why would they be held accountable for Adam’s mistake?

How do you deal with all the pain and suffering in nature if it wasn’t due to the fall of Adam? This would make god a horrible monster.

I can’t believe that I used to believe this stuff too. Luckily, when I looked into the evidence for evolution, I gave up my faith as the only smart thing to do. I strongly suggest you do the same because it just isn’t coherent. Charles Darwin and Charles Lyell are the great god killers.

    • Interesting that so many assumptions are needed to support the incorrect view of early man. Recent discoveries by secular scientists have shown that roughly 90% of the mutant genes of a father and mother are passed on to their offspring. The in-depth study found that as new generations come into being the mutant gene problem grows expotentially. Thus, a son or daughter has roughly 180% of the total mutant genes that exist in the combined gene count of the two parents. This mutant gene study covered on average five living generations. This enabled the scientists to also do a regresive study to determine how many generations it would take to get back to ‘perfection’. Amazingly they determined it would take roughly 200 generations to get back to a ‘perfect’ woman.
However this creates a great problem for secular scientists who believe in evolution, not creation. The interesting part of this study is that Cain would have been able to marry a sister or close cousin without the problem of genetic problems caused by later generations. The point is that the mutant gene problem began when sin entered the world in Eden.
I remember a time in the early 20th century when there were relatively few genetic problems when compared to today’s world. Autism was so rare it was not even on the medical radar. AMD, Alzheimer’s disease and a great variety of other mutant gene problems were extremely rare.
Those who claim other tribes existed along with Adam and Eve are simply refuting the inerrant Word of God. There are too many proofs of a young earth to go into detail here but here are a couple: 1) When men first thought of going to the moon the problem they foresaw was the perceived accumulation of space dust that, given a 4-billion year old solar system, meant the dust had to be approximately 3-feet thick. Whoa, that turned out to be only a fraction of an inch, just about 6,000 years worth! 2) The Earth’s magnetic field is generated by an iron core magnet. Anyone who has studied physics knows for a fact that an iron core magnet looses it strength over a period of time. The Earth’s magnetic field has been measured for more than 150 years now and its strength is steadily decreasing. Why is this important? If the Earth did not have a magnetic field it would be impossible for any living thing to exist because of the sun’s damaging rays. That’s what creates the northern and southern lights, the damaging rays being diverted around the Earth by the magnetic field.
Why is there nothing living on the moon, not even a virus or bacteria? The moon has no magnetic field. Why are space vehicles and the space station surrounded by a protective gold layer? That’s what protects both men and vehicles.
In my humble opinion the Bible is inerrant and is the true Word of God. One of the most fascinating ‘quotes’ of Jesus is, “Before Abraham was, I Am.” Notice that Abraham was in the past tense but Jesus (God) was in the present tense…..at the time of Abraham!
We live in space and time created by God, who does not. Someday we will know the absolute truth. Worrying about what some individual thinks is the truth is a waste of what time we do have here. Belief in Jesus as the sacrificial Lamb of God is all that is needed. All the rest outside the Word is, in my opinion, folly.

      • ” This enabled the scientists to also do a regresive study to determine how many generations it would take to get back to ‘perfection”

This, here, quite clearly demonstrates you know very little about evolutionary biology and science in general. There is no such thing as ‘de-evolving’ to a lesser species. So there can be no such thing as this silly notion of a ‘perfect’ human. Whatever that is supposed to mean.

All evolutionary changes are ‘mutations’. All of them.

        • You insert the false statement “..evolutionary biology and science…” which means you base your belief on a lie. It would appear you do not understand the term “regression” when it comes to math. If I give you a string of figures such as: 256, 128, 64, 32 and ask you to give me what you think the next number should be you would study the numbers and determine that the first number (256) is twice the second (128), and 128 is twice 64, and 32 half of 64 you can see that there is a measured regression of the number string. In only five more regressive steps you would end up with the number 1. Using the same exponential math (which is a very simple process) you can start with a penny and double it every day. In 30 days you will have more than $5 million dollars. This, in simple terms, is exponential progression. If you start with roughly $5.37 million dollars and cut it in half every day you have exponential regression. Thus, it is possible to start with a known number of mutant genes within a single human genome structure and, if you can determine within a certain degree of accuracy the exponential progression factor, you can use the same factoring to return to essentially zero. Simple, huh?!
Your belief that mutations lead to a progressively superior result are also false. Nearly 100% of mutant genes result is an inferior offspring. On the rare occasions when a “positive” mutant gene may in some manner help create a superior attribute in offspring, the overwhelming number of “negative” mutant genes render that as a worthless result.
Simply do a study of the miracle of sight and everything that is required for that to occur, and you can see that it is virtually impossible for that ability to have evolved. That, my friend, is fact. Once you pass thru the veil at the end of this life and see the real truth you will know with certainty that your following of human reasoning has resulted in a terrible conclusion. You are in my prayers.

          • Ernest,

Incorrect; I made no false statement.

I’m sorry, but again, you don’t really understand the fundamentals of evolution. You’ve demonstrated that with both of your comments. You just spent a considerable time using a false math analogy. Let’s leave the math as math and the science as science, shall we.

“Your belief that mutations lead to a progressively superior result are also false”

Incorrect. I never stated that. Please read what is written and not what you wish to hear. This is evidence of confirmation bias.

All changes are mutations. You need to stop using pseudo-science terms such as ‘superior’, ‘inferior’, ‘perfection’, ‘regression’. To correct you, the majority of mutations are neutral in their effects on the organisms in which they occur.

Being a dedicated Christian for 34 yrs, and now a non-theist, I too used to rely on a lot of peusdo-science to rationalise the cognitive dissonance in the faith I had. It’s a defence mechanism kicking in. As you can imagine, Ive spent a great deal studying these topics.

You can save your prayers for me, which we know are to no avail, and better spend your time on productive things; such as inner reflection and actually studying evolution with less selection and affirmation bias.

            best of luck

        • You say all evolutionary changes are mutations all of them. But are all mutations good for evolution? Or do they all contribute to evolution? I just see a hole or something missing in your arguement. I don’t think he means de-evolving, but looking back at history. Going backwards.

    • I am reminded of an actual event that occurred in “recent history” when a team of explorers came upon a group of “primitive” people living in what was then Borneo. Once they became acquainted one of the explorers produced a video camera and began taping the natives who were astonished when they saw the screen displaying their movements and audio. The explorer handed the camera to one of the native men, showed him which buttons to push and then stood back as the man joyfully operated the camera and laughed as the results were displayed on the screen. The point of this is that there was absolutely no difference between the explorer and the native in terms of their humanity and abilities. Upon first using a video camera both were amazed that it could capture both video and audio. The explorer knew no more about the internal workings of the camera than the native, but both were able to produce the same results. The ONLY difference was the experience and knowledge accumulated during each man’s lifetime. The same reasoning can be applied to ancient man as to those of us living today. The ancients had the same thought processes and abilities that we possess today. The only difference is our surroundings. To say that we have evolved is pure nonsense. We live in houses, they lived in tents; we drive cars, they rode animals; we dress in store-bought clothing, they made their own from materials spun on a wheel and created on a loom. If a newborn today was thrust into the same world as the ancients they would have the same experiences and accumulation of knowledge provided by their parents and surroundings. Only when man progresses as a result of experimentation and application of accumulated knowledge does the future change, but man doesn’t. The smart phone is an excellent example of our current state of existence. Children today would have to learn Morse code and be shown how to operate a telegraph key in order to communicate with those in other parts of the world had they been born a century earlier. To them the telegraph is ancient “technology” and completely alien. That is the same view we have of Biblical times, but the thought processes of Adam and Eve and all who followed are the same as ours. We just have much more accumulated knowledge and experience upon which to function. Therefore we should not consider ourselves any greater than those who lived in the past, perhaps just a bit more fortunate.

  3. You keep looking and in a years time, you will find that the bible and evolution can’t be reconciled. You will either have to twist the bible like biologos or twist the science like answers in genesis. At this point, if you are being honest with yourself, you should see that it can’t be done and you will leave your faith.

    • Jlafan, u don’t have to leave ur faith because u discover Bible is not perfect. Any divine inspiration touching human mind can never be perfect when it’ written down. If God intended for it to be perfect and preserved as such he would have just let the whole book materialized in a quick sec -multiple copies, with some hidden copies for other generations to come- and not allowed it to come through imperfect human mind and morals.

Why would Jesus needed to correct the “eye for an eye” concept, the “divorcement” concept and others if Bible was perfect?

Our thinking of the Bible being perfect from the beginning is the mistake made. Even the very book said “we know in part” -I Corinthians chap.12.

It’s quite obvious that scriptures were edited in some parts. What we need to do is build our relationship with the spirit of God, he’s the one Jesus said will lead us into truth. And by him we should utilize this leading into what is of God in the Bible and what is not.

It’s not the book that authenticates God, it’s the other way around. God is real, Jesus is Lord, his Spirit lives in us; sincerely seeking of God will result in a definite direction as what to believe and not believe in scripture…

So don’t give up ur faith, the Bible did not die for u, Jesus did…ur allegiance is to him, not a book. The Book is to help us understand God Better; where it fails to inform we just skip over it and read in other places which glorifies God & Jesus.

      • If the Bible is not perfect then why believe it was divinely inspired?

”The Book is to help us understand God Better; where it fails to inform we just skip over it and read in other places which glorifies God & Jesus.”

Well, at least you are honest about it.

        • The Bible as God gave it to the original prophets is perfect. However, no translation can be perfect. The reason is simply because it is impossible to translate certain words from the original language into a form of English that everyone can understand. Read the Bible from Genesis to Revelations, using pretty much whatever translation you wish, and you will see that although there were many scribes, there was only One Author. Those who choose to reject God try to find anything to debunk the Word because that is the only way they can exist in this troubled world.

      • That’s real talk…re reading Genesis 1 and was amazed that God created mankind and that the earth had evrything in it, told them to replenish like he did with fish in the sea, and then later breathes life into Adam from dust (I take that literally)..But if context and distinction be everything ( like your realistic view that Cain was worried abiut being killed by strangers) does that mean the first people were not in God’s image…very interesting…But obviously they looked and gave birth like regular ones…Somebody has explaining to do. But most Christians I know or knew dont really worried too much about apologetic that disagree with what they believe. Who really believes that there were six fingered giants? I do though…

      • It is really very simple. All answers are in the Bible and no incest was not acceptable then as it is now. For the simple reason a SIN is always SIN and God does not change one act to be acceptable from one time to be acceptable in another because of some mutant genes somehow he cannot support it as it leads to weaker humans or moronic humans as it is written here. First of all SIN in not biological or metaphysical – it is simply disobeying Gods perfect order or laws as shown to Moses. God did not make a mistake by allowing brothers to marry sister. So my simple answer is Go back to the Bible and read. Gen Chap 2. You will see the creation of Adam and Eve: Gen 2 verse 4 – When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. 6 Instead, springs[b] came up from the ground and watered all the land. 7 Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.
When you read the description of the landscape you will read that it is not the 6th day but the 3rd Day. So how can that be. Well one conclusion is that Eden was created separately from the rest of creation (like a nursery) and that’s where Adam and Eve lived. Note after Adam was created first and God says its not good for man to be alone so he created Animals and birds , still no helper was just right for him. Remember creation in Gen 1 Animals and birds did not appear on Day 5 and 6. verse 20 “He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him”. So how can Adam be created before animals – again Eden is the answer. Then he caused Adam to sleep and then he created Eve. When God was satisfied with this he went back to Day 6 and created human beings and made them male and female – only one conclusion Adam and Eve was the first Male and Female but others were created on Day 6.
        verse 27; Gen 1
So God created human beings[d] in his own image.
        In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

      • The Bible is the word of God sure it is written so that only by faith his revelation is revealed to those who believe in God. Faith comes from hearing and hearing the word of God. The second hearing is the revelations which comes to you by faith. If you don’t believe in God – the bible does not make any sense to you and therefore you just consider it as a historical attempt by some religious people to describe their God so the deep meaning is missing from you. Remember Jesus is the Word and the word was with God and the Word is God – John 1 – In the beginning. You cannot down play His Word which is in the Bible and His Son as they are one and the same. The reason why he corrects the Bible not because the word is wrong but the interpretation is wrong. Often when passed from Generation to generation of course man have read the wrong assumptions and translations. He came and fulfilled the prophesies and set out more that will come if not already covered in the old testament. Everything the Father has has been given to Jesus – and He speaks as the Father speaks. He knows the Father and the Father knows him – no one else knows the Father but Jesus and vice versa. So now the Holy Spirit is with us here on earth and He only speaks what he hears from Jesus. It is the Holy Spirit who moves across the earth today which explains the phenomena about Christian revival and supernatural feats and miracles you read and witness in You Tube videos (a lot of fake there too so you have to investigate it via his Word). Miracles is the manifestation of Gods Word. So yeah you can take the Bible and bank it as the true word of God.

      • Thanks for sharing this. This is how I feel. Doesn’t God want us to be critical thinkers and to question things? What is wrong with questioning the Bible? Just because I question things in the Bible wich was witten by many men a long time ago, does not mean I do not believe in God. Thank you for your clear explanation!

        • Joseph, I don’t think it is a case of questioning the Bible but rather a case of question your understanding of a certain passage contained therein. Those who do not believe in creation try to twist the Word of God to fit their unbelief. Evolution is nothing more than one of the great lies of the enemy of God. According to evolutionists man began as something that crept up out of the muck and mire and evolved into humanoids. What nonsense. If that is true then we would have to believe that this “ancient” creature was born out of an egg. Imagine now that at a certain turning point in evolution a cold-blooded creature, born from an egg, gave birth to a warm-blooded mammal from a womb. Now that takes some really crazy reasoning. If you are a true evolutionist you have to believe that that event actually occurred at some point in the distant past. I’m waiting for someone to explain exactly how an incredible number of mutant genes suddenly sprung into existence on only ONE generation. Again, nonsense. Read the Word and believe.

    • I agree with Israel. The Bible may be filled with a couple mistakes because it was written by Humans, then translated by Humans, so there’s bound to be some mistakes.

  4. It seems to me you are making assumptions as to what would be necessary to support an interpretation you want to support but I don’t think the text in anyway supports it. In Genesis God creates types of things in separate steps. In Genesis 2 it says man became a living being when God created him, not that he transformed some pre-existing hominid. It also says that God put Adam to sleep and took out a rib to make a woman. It may have symbolic meaning but it’s quite a bedtime story for children if God inspired such a tale and if it’s only a story. They might not have been ready for a scientific explanation but surely such a story does not support the veracity of the Bible if trying to harmonize it with subsequent scientific knowledge. It’s rather on the level of telling children that storks deliver babies. There are somethings in Genesis that are easier to harmonize with evolution but I don’t find the creation of human beings one of them. Why would it be that God straight forwardly commands/calls things into being except when he gets to the creation of man and then he inspires a Poof! story that is completely at odds with any harmonization with evolution. The tree and snake story also may be symbolic but it also seems to be more like a parable than the recording of factual events. What did Adam and Eve really do to sin against God if the story is only a parable about it, and why would God be so cryptic about it and inspire a story that would appear to be no better than many other ancient stories about why the world is the way it is. To me the whole Genesis creation account is easier to interpret as meaning to claim supernatural actions rather than trying to fit scientific knowledge into silent gaps in the text. Again, if you want to harmonize evolution with Genesis you have to admit the Adam and Eve story is just a story and not remotely the way humans came into existence. Either that or you do what you did and say God decided to tell a bedtime story for theological purposes. To me this type of harmonization is not consistent. On the one hand you want to say look here these bits seem to fit scientific knowledge but then you want to change the rules for bits that don’t fit so well. And what the heck do you think is the meaning of the angel with the flaming sword preventing Adam and Eve from getting back into the Garden and eating from the tree of life. I’m not sure what the point of eternal life is if as you say sin only resulted in spiritual death and humans were not designed to live forever. I think that traditionally the understanding has been that human death is the result of sin. If for example Adam and Eve had not sinned, would it make much sense for them to get old and decrepit and die in a Good” world.

  5. Cain and the Land of Nod

Some claim that the passage in Genesis 4:16-17 means that Cain went to the land of Nod and found a wife. Thus, they can conclude there must have been another race of people on the earth, who were not descendants of Adam, who produced Cain’s wife.

“And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Enoch: and he built a city, and he called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.”

From what has been stated previously, it is clear that all humans, Cain’s wife included, are descendants of Adam. However, this passage does not say that Cain went to the land of Nod and found a wife. John Calvin, commenting on these verses, states:

“From the context we may gather that Cain, before he slew his brother, had married a wife; otherwise Moses would now have related something respecting his marriage.”[13]

Cain was married before he went to the land of Nod. He didn’t find a wife there, but “knew” (had sexual relations with) his wife.[14]

Others have argued that because Cain built a “city” in the land of Nod, there must have been a lot of people there. However, the Hebrew word translated as “city” need not mean what we might imagine from the connotations of “city” today. The word meant a “walled town” or a protected encampment.[15] Even a hundred people would be plenty for such a “city.” Nevertheless, there could have been many descendants of Adam on the earth by the time of Abel’s death (see below).

Who was Cain fearful of? (Genesis 4:14)

Cain kills Abel. Click here for the story. (Illustration copyrighted).
Some claim that there had to be lots of people on earth other than Adam and Eve’s descendants, otherwise Cain would not have been fearful of people wanting to slay him for killing Abel.

First of all, in the days before civil government was instituted to punish murderers (Genesis 9:6), someone would want to harm Cain for killing Abel only if they were closely related to Abel! Strangers could hardly have cared. So the people Cain was afraid of could not have been another race of people.

Second, Cain and Abel were born quite some time before Abel’s death. Genesis 4:3 states:

“And in the course of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering to the Lord.”

Note the phrase “in the course of time.” We know that Seth was born when Adam was 130 years old (Genesis 5:3), and Eve saw him as a “replacement” for Abel (Genesis 4:25). Therefore, the period from Cain’s birth to Abel’s death may have been 100 years or more—allowing plenty of time for other children of Adam and Eve to marry and have children and grandchildren. By the time Abel was killed, there could well have been a considerable number of descendants of Adam and Eve, involving several generations. This explanation is from http://www.christiananswers.net/q-aig/aig-c004.html and seems a good one to me. The article at the link also addresses more related to this topic. I’d be interested what you think. Let me know if the link doesn’t work.

    • Anthony, interesting article, thanks for the link. The author suggests incest was acceptable early on but was later forbidden by God due to the accumulation of genetic mistakes – not because it was immoral. However, several verses in the Bible say that incest is immoral (Leviticus 18:6-18). This strikes me as another example of divine moral absolutism not being so absolute after all.

      • It was immoral WHEN God said so. [KJV] Romans 5:13
(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. In Lev 24:19&20 vengeance is allowed. But in the new testament Jesus gives a new command – [KJV] Matthew 5:38=39
¶Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

    • Anthony, I think you’re right on by saying that Cain already had a wife when he went to the land of Nod. All people are related in one way or another through ancestral lineage. The Bible is clear that we are of one blood and kind. We are all descendants of Adam.

The evolutionists, on the other hand, have no idea where male and female came from or for that matter where sexual dimorphism originated. Some evolutionists are not even sure how the split is beneficial to evolution. There are two scenarios which can be conceived on the evolutionary framework about the origins of male and female. First, all humans are descendants of a creature which split into male and female at some point or second, humans were kicked up by evolutionary means in different parts of the world which experienced a split between male and female along the way. The former implies incest while the latter does not.

However, by no means am I an advocate of evolution. It is a conceptual framework that has failed the scientific test. So many anomalies have mounted up that it is astounding that the hypothesis is still standing.

    • If you understand what you are reading Cain and Abel were conceived and born as twins are. Only Abel was Adams son and Cain was Satan son. They were the first set of twins born having two different fathers. For this reason God loved Able and not Cain. Ask for wisdom and knowledge of what you are reading and if you truly are trying it will be opened up for you

    • It’s true, Cain took a wife from the land of nod. Cain and Abel being twins with different fathers. They were the first of these. The serpent was cain’s father and Adam was Abel’s father. The reason for Adam and Eve not being the first people was to establish the geanology for our savior to be conceived and born from the people who believe and was without sin. Mother was a virgin and of the geanology as well as Joseph being of the geanology according to all that is written. Everything leading up to the birth and life and crucifixion of Jesus Christ of Nazareth is all there. And you can verify by the prophecies that were fulfilled and that are being fulfilled to this day leading up to the return of Jesus Christ. Which is coming sooner than some may believe.

  6. You did well on the creation, but look further into the Christians and why satan is who they are worshipping. Some of them don’t know that jesus is a pagan god with all the idols, the cross and the sun. You speak the truth, they are blind, The Almighty Creator will continue to open you eyes, only if you desire the truth.

  7. satan his done his biggest deception, to pull us apart, than to stand against him. That old serpent, want us to be angry at our Creator, because we don’t understand what our reasons for being here or His purpose for creating us. Humble yourself and ask Him, why and what does He want you to do. Listen, and He will answer you.

  8. Thank you James for presenting a well reasoned discussion. The importance as others have pointed out is that the Bible Canon is there for us to understand the ‘WHY’ God created us and take us to His plan of Salvation. The ‘HOW’ is not the intention of Scripture – he gives us brains and leaves that to us to work through and learn about the universe he has so marvelously and graciously given to us to look after and learn about – and what a joy that is! We will continue to theorise until God eventually winds up Creation and re-creates the New Heaven & Earth.

    • That is the perfect example of a false dichotomy.

And false anyway since God spent most of the time telling us the how!!

This view was promoted most famously by the agnostic Stephen J Gould (not a known close relation) who now knows better. It’s very closely related to “non-overlapping magisteria” which is a very unbiblical way to view the Bible.

  9. replenish does NOT mean to refill when the KJV (and its forerunners) were translated. It meant “to fill” (which you correctly stated and then started talking as though you had just said “to refill”).

Please check your facts more closely. This truth has been pointed out by YECs and Hebrew scholars for decades and it is very disappointing you are still repeating this lie.

The Hebrew word translated “replenish” means simply “to fill”. It is thus translated in modern versions. This point provides not the slightest support for you abberant and exotic view of scripture.

And yes, label me as “literalist” if you must but that is another word that has changed meaning and now means “wooden literalist” which I am not. I just believe in sound hermeneutics, which YEC is and always has been, long before “science” started lying about the “age of the earth”.

  10. I don’t agree with you on everything…… but I surely agree with you that Adam and Eve was not the first people on earth. As I can see and what God told me the first people was created on the sixth day. God said let us make man in our own image and likeness. And he made the trees the animals the water he made trees bearing seed he made the herbs he made everything they needed to survive and he told them to be fruitful and multiply and fill the Earth.. Now sometime after the 7th Day because God rested on the 7th Day so sometime after the scripture does not say was it the 8th day or 10 years later but a mist went up and water the ground and then he formed Adam I believe that part. Then he planted a garden and he put the man in it. then God made Eve from Adam’s Rib I also believe that. after those two got kicked out of the garden God never them to fill the Earth he did tell them to be fruitful and multiply. And here’s where I think you messed up at.. when Cain killed Abel he was afraid that someone was going to kill him so God put a mark on his head and said that anyone who tries to Avenged Abel’s death that killing cain that he would take Vengeance on him 7 times 7 this is true. Adam and Eve only had two children at that time and one killed the other and that one got kicked out of Eden the third child wasn’t born until after cain left and it was another boy. Then after the third son was born then they had more sons and daughters. So yes male and female was created on the sixth day Adam and Eve came after the 7th Day.

  11. Cain wasn’t adam’s son! Ck the family line….eve and satan were togather and satan has a blood line..cain…thats when a lot of trouble had become and YAHWEH said his spirit will not always strive with man…peace

  12. The Hebrew manuscripts are very clear on this matter. God created mankind on the 6th day, he rested the 7th day, and on the eighth day he created “Ha’ Adam” , which is to say “Adam” with the article. The sixth day creation has no such article. Cain could not have gone to Nod to take a wife if there were no other people there.

  13. That’s real talk…re reading Genesis 1 and was amazed that God created mankind and that the earth had evrything in it, told them to replenish like he did with fish in the sea, and then later breathes life into Adam from dust (I take that literally)..But if context and distinction be everything ( like your realistic view that Cain was worried abiut being killed by strangers) does that mean the first people were not in God’s image…very interesting…But obviously they looked and gave birth like regular ones…Somebody has explaining to do. But most Christians I know or knew dont really worried too much about apologetic that disagree with what they believe. Who really believes that there were six fingered giants? I do though…

  14. Interesting that so many assumptions are needed to support the incorrect view of early man.

  15. Hi
    My name is Marko Anguei
in God’s creation, there are more words that surprise the people.
But true according to my own understanding.
Adam was the first man because, if there are others human during God’s creation, why those were not have any scriptures that narrate us the true creation about their generation.
So that is why I believe Adam as a first man,
Although Cain was afraid to be kill by others,
    Maybe it is God’s work.
But if you narrate us the creation of those people, we consider it with this story of Adam.

    Thanks.

    • Progressives would really like to disavow the Bible to forward their own agenda. However, the Bible is the true Word of God in every respect. Some interpret certain passages one way while others may take a different view. That does not change the truth. Remember, Adam, and probably Eve as well, lived hundreds of years and had many children after Cain and Able. With a near perfect gene structure marriage between brother and sister, cousins, etc., would not present a problem. With each passing generation mutant genes accumulate at an astonishing rate. A group of secular scientists recently found that approximately 90% of mutant genes are passed from each parent to their offspring. This means each of their children have approximately 90% of the total mutant gene structure of both parents combined. Perhaps that is why later instructions to avoid marriage between ‘close relatives’ was given to the prophets. A pastor friend of mine kept a ‘used’ Bible on his pulpit and when there was objection to a certain passage he would open that Bible to the specific page and rip it out. He would then comment, “If we continue to remove those ‘mistakes’ God made we will soon have His work corrected as it should be.” Enough said.

  16. According to the Word of God, Adam was the first living breathing being on the planet. The creation account gives us the lay out of how the Earth was created. You have to read carefully and with consideration. Now, after Adonai created all things that he intended to create He rested from His work on the 7th day, so that all that He created could produce, as He had made it to do. Now, right after that the Bible gives an account of the history of the Earth. B’RESHEET (GENESIS) 2:4 is where it is gets interesting. Read carefully and with consideration. Adonai made Adam before He made anything living on the planet. When He formed a person from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and he became a living being….there were not even plants made yet. And we see in the creation account in Genesis 1:11 that all plant life was made on the 3rd day, even before Adonai made the sun, moon & stars (they were made the 4th day). Adam was made after Adonai had divided the water from the land and after He had created an atmosphere to sustain life and set gravity to a set point. After Adonai made Adam then He created Eden and placed Adam in the garden. Then Adonai made all plant life for Adam to eat, and then He saw that Adam was alone and made all other living creatures on their specific days. Eve was not made yet. And we see in the creation account that Adonai made humankind…male & female he created them on the 6th day and He blessed them and told them to be fruitful & multiple and to subdue the Earth. All of humankind was made on the 6th day, Adam was made on the 3rd day after Adonai made dry land appear but before He created all plant life. Adam was the first, and he was the only one that had the breath of life (Holy Spirit) breathed into & Eve was the only woman made from the rib of man. Eve is actually the mother of all currently living, because after Adam ate the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil sin entered into all the Earth. Before the fall of Adam, life on the planet was as it should be…there was no sin and everything and everyone was at peace. Humankind and animals were not carnivorous or violent & lived together in harmony. But after the fall of Adam, sin entered in and the planet was thrown into chaos. Humankind realized they were naked as well and now they were driven by their own lusts of the flesh. Humankind was very wicked and all the imaginings of their hearts were always of evil only. Adonai regretted making humankind on the earth: it grieved His heart. The end of all living beings had come, because the earth was filled with violence. Noah was the only one that walked with God. Noah was from Seth, Adam and Eve’s child after Able was murdered by Cain. Only the line of Adam and Eve were spared from the flood. Noah and his family. Now, all of humankind is actually descendants from Noah’s family which is the Adamic line. Now, since Jesus died for us on the cross we now can have the Holy Spirit just as Adam did in the beginning. There is a lot more secrets to be revealed in Scripture, all in Adonai’s timing and in our careful and considerate study. I didn’t make any of this up….I just read carefully and with consideration as to what was actually written.

    • Cut the nonsense with ‘Adonai. That is not one of the Hebrew words that relates to God. People sometimes come up with words that attempt to diminish the true God of the Bible. There is the Creator God, God with us, etc., but Adonai is not one of those.

        • I need you to point to the exact scripture where that word is used to indicate God. That is not a hateful response but one that was posted to correct bad information. If you like I can give you at least six other words in the Bible that are used as a title for God.

          • Like I said it is in the complete Jewish bible that I was using as a reference. And yes you are being hateful & petty. If you don’t like my choice of reference than that is problem, not mine. You can have your preference & I have mine. Now, I’m done with this. He has many titles & yes Lord/ Adonai is one.

            • You still failed to give me scriptural reference to the name “Lord Adonai”. I have read the Bible from beginning to end and do not recall seeing that Name. Perhaps I missed it and you can enlighten me. Just saying…..

              • The reference is anywhere in the Bible where it uses the word “Lord”. Besides…it’s not His name…it’s a title and a very common title that is used when addressing Him. Because He is our master, our ruler, the one in complete control. I never said that His name was Lord…or Adonai. I was just using it because the translation that I use is the Complete Jewish Bible & it uses Hebrew words for names and for titles. And Adonai is Lord in Hebrew.

              • The word El is a root word sometimes referring to God and has different meanings. However when it is used in the Jewish (read Hebrew) Bible it is almost always qualified by additional words that further define the meaning that distinguishes the one True God from false gods. A more common title of God in the Hebrew Bible is Elohim. You can twist and turn however you want but perhaps one of the most ‘correct’ reference to God is I AM, which was His instructions for Moses.
El Shaddai was His name when he appeared to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Another proper name of God in Judaism is Yhwh. The prohibition on misuse of the name of God is the primary subject of the command not to take the name of the Lord in vain. Instead of pronouncing YHWH during prayer, Jews say “Adonai” (Lord). As such it is a common practice to restrict the use of the word “Adonai” to prayer only.

              • What is your problem? Seriously? LET ME BE CLEAR…I SAID THAT IT IS IN THE JEWISH BIBLE THAT I AM REFERENCING. I AM NOT TWISTING OR TURNING ANYTHING, IT IS IN THE BIBLE I USE. GO GET IN A VAIN DEBATE WITH SOMEONE THAT IS INTERESTED IN IT. Your complaint has absolutely NOTHING to do with salvation & me using the title Adonai isn’t a salvation issue & Jesus knows my heart. You are puffed up with knowledge & seek vain debates because your also prideful. I however am not. I was only wanting to share what the Lord had showed me while I was reading the creation account. I am done & will take myself off notifications so you can comment more if you like but I will not respond anymore. I’m just not interested in these types of debates because they do not have anything to do with what Jesus has done for us & does not affect ones salvation. Be blessed.

              • FINALLY, you get to the issue. Congratulations. Sorry to have upset you but a Christian attitude always wins, even in this world…at least if we’re patient enough. Not certain how the word ‘hateful’ crept into your conversation but that is not a word I would use without knowing the heart of the person with whom I’m conversing. As the Word says, the fear of God is the beginning of knowledge.

    • …After re reading the verse with context in mind your view does seem accurate because of the context…because he is looking back.Yet one has to ask “How could they be ” fruitful and multiply” without having sex?. Some pastors believe that Adam and Eve wre having passionate but childless sex in the garden …I don’t think so since they were never even able to conceive until eating from “tree”… Even though I suppose they were smart enough to figure out that was what mammals do.. Somehow or another there were other people out there..Not that it is super relevant to us getting to heaven today..Anybody looking for a lot of scientific facts for their faith may be missing Tue point exactly…one person even told me that the views mentioned above about other humans reconciled her to the faith because it filled a gaping hole in her Theology.. Cain did leave and did marry someone and did build village…I personally believed that ” maybe Adam and Eve had child after child over the period of time and Cain married his family members….Did he now? I had to correct myself..Being the first from the womb beside his brother, was the place so big that Cain could have younger brothers and sisters that he didn’t know about, who moved away became his age or older, and then built cities without him knowing exactly who they were.. Why would other family members move away?..Whatever the case maybe its just one of those things God uses to “confound the wise”.. At any rate food for thought but don’t think it will be mentioned at Judgment Seat or White Throne Judgment.

      • According to the Bible Adam lived more than 900 years. We don’t know how long Eve lived but that is of no consequence here. If Cain, who also lived more than 900 years, left and went to other cities it is easy to see that other offspring of Adam and Eve had children and moved to other areas as well. If we take a time period of 900 years and assume an average generational age of 30 years we see that upwards of 30 generations are possible. Although the progression of mutant genes after the fall escalated with each succeeding generation, there were still enough ‘pure’ genes to avoid the cousin-to-cousin problems we know exists today. Thus it is easy to assume Cain, along with his brothers and sisters, would produce a geometrically increasing number of people during the following centuries. Another thing to consider is that only eight people survived the flood so now what? Those who refute the Word of God are basically asserting that His Word is somehow false, therefore, He must be wrong. That is also denying the God of creation. Jesus specifically states that those who deny Him before man, He will deny before God. I refuse to be in that group, and so should you.

  19. Adam and Eve were the first people but not the “only” people…. The others came afterwards. The “god like” people….

  20. You don’t know the time span between generations; therefore, your theory holds no ground. Adam and Eve lived long years (biblical times people lived hundreds of years) and during this time, where able to produce and reproduce. As the years went by, these generations countinued to expand and could no longer stay in the same areas. That is why they decided to expand their horizons and venture out. And the Years continued to go by.. that is why, Cain was afraid of strangers. He didn’t know what to expect out there, as time had passed and more hymns had taken over the earth.

  21. Cain was exiled by God for murdering Abel (Gen 14:6). I believe you meant Genesis 4:6 (typo). Gen. 14:6 deals with Abraham and Lots post-rescue. Concerning whether Adam and Eve were historical figures, archaeology does support the possibility such as the findings at Tepe Gawra, Ninevah, Bahrain and other locations regarding the rivers of Eden, Adapa and the discovery of a serpent with legs. See my website’s archaeology section on Eden, Adam and Eve – http://www.defendingthebible.com.

  22. hmmnnnn- —- deffinately gets the mind thinking. My theory, on everything (court cases, school shootings, terrorist attacks, bible verses, ect…) is that if i have to pick or choose on what is fact or not bc ONE thing is presented to me as TRUE (adam & eve for example) then i cant believe any of it.
That doesnt mean i now am anti god, i believe the real story isnt told to us. Hmmmm-i wonder why…what are they trying to hide from us that is so important that they have to put in this much EFFORT to percieve us.

  23. No place in the KJV Bible does it state that Cain was the first born or eldest of Adam and Eve. It simply states Adam and Eve had relations and they had Cain. It does not state it was the first time they had relations or that it was the first baby they had. According to the Pearl of Great Price, scripture for Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Adam and Eve were having grandchildren when Cain was born and that he married a niece. There were a lot of people living on the earth then and any one of them could do harm to Cain. If the Pearl of Great Price is true and gives us greater insite–you’ll have to decide that.

  24. That is interesting. I am so frustrated why so many Christians have so many debates about so many things in the Bible. Why does it seem hard to understand?

    • If you are a “true believer” (read that saved) then you have no problem understanding and accepting the Word of God. It is those who are not in that category who have a problem. It’s a bit like reading something written in a foreign language in which you are not fluent but recognize certain words. Such a situation allows you to draw some conclusions about what is written but unable to truly understand the actual meaning of what is written. Going to church and saying you’re a christian does not make you one any more than standing in a garage and saying your a car makes makes you a Chevy.

  25. You are making the assumption that Cain was the firstborn of Adam and Eve. In the King James Bible it does not say that. It merely states that Adam knew Eve (had relations) and she conceived and bore Cain. It doesn’t say it was the first time they had relations or that Cain was the first to be conceived. Just because Cain was mentioned first doesn’t mean there were not other children of Adam and Eve born before Cain. the Pearl of Great Price says that Adam and Eve were grandparents and that Cain married his niece.
