What is the New Age Religion?

The term New Age is a broad category in itself as it is an amalgamation of various practices and beliefs interpolated into one. It is a worldwide movement that has taken many facets and aspects of various beliefs with the sole aim of personal spiritual development of an individual. It encompasses a clear aspect of self-centeredness as well as a “Have-it-Your-Way” type of ideology. For many New Agers it is not seen as a religion but rather a mixing of many religious and philosophical ideas into one, a single entity with many branches, and the way to live life.

Furthermore, New Agers do not entirely believe in evil and thus as a result do not accept mans separation from God as a result of sin as is affirmed in the biblical narrative. Rather to a New Ager it is more the belief that man has forgotten their divinity or the power of divinity that resides within them, as a result the solution to this problem is for one to seek a “higher consciousness” through the process of meditation, yoga, exercises, breathing exercises, diets, crystals, spirit guides, channeling and more. It is believed by the New Ager that through the mediums of such practices they can unlock and “awaken” the god in them, and the god in man in general. In brevity this is what the New Ager generally believes, that:

-Man is God
-God is in everything (pantheism)
-Mind creates reality
-All things are one (monism)
-One’s own experience validates the truth

Furthermore, if one has a slight understanding of Hinduism, the predominant religion in India as well as in certain other places in the world, you may notice certain overlaps between it and the New Age ideology, in fact there are many overlaps and parallels between the two faiths. Much of the ideology of Hinduism is thus the same as the aim to awake the inner being/god, Hinduism also believes man and the world are one, there is also the concept of vibration as a healing found in the two, among many others. :

Since all is God, then only one reality exists, and all religions are simply different paths to that ultimate reality. The universal religion can be visualized as a mountain, with many sadhanas (spiritual paths) to the summit. Some are hard; others easy. There is no one correct path. All paths eventually reach the top. (We) anticipate that a new universal religion which contains elements of all current faiths will evolve and become generally accepted worldwide.

Furthermore, it is best known that New Agers also believe in Jesus although not in the way that Christians believe in him as the unique saviour sent by God. In short they believe Jesus was just a great spiritual master, thus New Agers often attempt to gain understanding of Jesus from the Bible as well as other sources such as Bhagavad-Gita and then blend the two or more sources together to gain a complete image or understanding of who they think Jesus was. Often as a result they see Christians as narrow-minded and shortsighted.
